Struggling to Eat Healthy When Traveling?

Eating healthy while traveling can be challenging, but it's essential for maintaining your energy and well-being during your trip. Shelly and I recently traveled to Atlanta for our annual coaches convention. It really lived up to its nickname “HOTlanta”. It was over 100 degrees, but I digress.

We realize it’s not always easy to eat in a healthy manner but it is easier than you may think. You just have to be intentional.

Here are five tips to help you make healthier food choices while on the go:

1. Plan Ahead and Pack Snacks:

Before you embark on your journey, take some time to plan your meals and snacks. Research restaurants or eateries that offer healthier options at your destination. Additionally, pack some nutritious snacks like nuts, fruits, granola bars, or cut-up vegetables to curb hunger between meals. Having your own snacks readily available can prevent you from succumbing to unhealthy fast food or sugary treats when you're feeling hungry and tired.

2. Stay Hydrated:

Traveling can be dehydrating, especially if you're flying or spending long hours in transit. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout your journey to stay hydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it whenever possible. Avoid sugary beverages and excessive alcohol consumption, as they can add unnecessary calories and further dehydrate your body.

3. Choose Balanced Meals:

When dining out or ordering meals, try to balance your plate with a variety of nutrients. Opt for lean proteins like grilled chicken or fish, whole grains, and plenty of vegetables. Aim for colorful meals, as different colored vegetables often indicate various nutrients. If there are healthier options available, choose salads, soups, or dishes with lean proteins and vegetables instead of heavy, fried, or high-calorie options.

4. Practice Portion Control:

One common pitfall while traveling is overeating, especially when you encounter delicious local cuisine. To avoid overindulging, practice portion control. Share large meals with your travel companions or ask for smaller portions when possible. Also, be mindful of your hunger cues and stop eating when you feel satisfied, rather than stuffing yourself.

5. Be Mindful of Your Treats:

While it's okay to indulge in local delicacies and treats, be mindful of how frequently you're consuming them. Instead of eating indulgent foods at every meal, consider limiting them to one treat per day. This way, you can still enjoy the local cuisine without overloading your body with excess calories and unhealthy ingredients.

Remember, eating healthy while traveling doesn't mean you have to miss out on the experience of trying new foods or local specialties. It's about making conscious choices, being prepared, and finding a balance between indulgence and nourishment. By following these tips, you can enjoy your journey while staying on track with your health goals.
